Chapter 32

Can’t Hear You!

“Tom?”

No answer.

“Tommie?” I said a little louder. He either was ignoring me or couldn’t hear me. Probably a little bit of both. I walked over to his favorite chair, where he was reading a magazine, and put my hand on his arm gently to get his attention.

“What!” he said, startled, with a sudden jerk, retreating from my touch. “What do you want?” he said with impatience.

“I just wanted to talk with you,” I said, hurt and mad at the same time. There was no pleasing this man.

“Well, I can’t hear you out of my left ear. You know that,” he said. I thought it was more of a way of playing with me to put me off balance. Yet another way to be mad at me. He had a million reasons.

“Yes, I know. I thought you could hear me,” I said. He never seemed to have this much trouble hearing anyone else. “I was thinking that it might be nice if we had some friends over for your birthday. It is a long weekend, and we could have a barbecue.”

“Carolyn, I don’t want to celebrate my birthday with anyone. I don’t like parties, and you know I hate surprises.” It amazed me how very different we were.

“But I thought maybe just a few people,” I said. “It would be fun!”

“No, thanks,” he said. “I don’t want any fun.” This was one thing that was true about him.
